Chelsea defeats Arsenal in Community Shield
A Didier Drogba double gave Chelsea the first trophy of the new season as they went on to defeat London rivals Arsenal 2-1 in the Community Shield. Drogba sored a goal in each half as the defending premiership champions cruised to a comfortable win.
Jose Mourinho's Premiership holders Chelsea were outplayed for large portions of the match but they had the cutting edge in attack.
Drogba opened the scoring in the 8th minute when he controlled new signing Del Horno's pass on his chest before striking a neat volley passed a hapless Jens Lehmann in the Arsenal goal.
His second had no skill or finesse. Nothing but sheer power and determination. Eidur Gudjohnsen flicked the ball on for Drogba, who held off Philippe Senderos before rounding Lehmann. Whilst rounding Lehmann, Lauren had made ground but failed to win the all important 50-50 challenge with the Ivory Coast striker then curling in his second seven minutes after the restart.
The Gunners hit back through teenager Cesc Fabregas in the 65t minute after some good work on the right by Freddie Ljungberg.
These two teams meet in the second week of the premiership season at Stamford Bridge.
