Efficient out of 2008 Melbourne Cup
Last year's champion and Australia's best hope in the race, Efficient has been ruled out of the 2008 Melbourne Cup after sustaining an injury to a fetlock joint. The striking grey gelding has been spelled and will only resume racing next year.The news is a massive blow to local chances with at least eight international threats looming as potential victors, including Melbourne Cup favourite Septimus and Caulfield Cup winner All The Good.
Yellowstone confirmed for Melbourne Cup
The news is better for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam, with Yellowstone now confirmed to compete in the Melbourne Cup following an injury scare to his hip. The English stayer moved well in Tuesday morning track work at Sandown and has been given the green light to compete next week.
Chapple-Hyam has stated that Yellowstone, currently trading at $61 on IASbet.com, is the forgotten horse of the Melbourne Cup – especially on his current form line.
Septimus: Melbourne Cup favourite, but not sure bet
Just one week ago Septimus seemed an invincible favourite in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, but today his presence is a little less imposing following an unpersuasive gallop against stable mates Honolulu and Alessandro Volta, as well as humble comments from master trainer Aiden O'Brien.
