Melbourne Cup - Australia's Richest Horse Race
The Melbourne Cup is the richest handicap race in the world, worth over $5.5 million and attracting crowds exceeding 100,000 people to Flemington Racecourse. The Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November each year. It's a Group 1 event run over 3200- metres. The Melbourne Cup is Australia's most famous horse race, and is truly "The Race that Stops a Nation".
2008 Melbourne Cup Winner
In a dramatic photo-finish, Viewed ($41) inched home by a nose from English stayer Bauer ($21) to give Bart Cummings his 12th Cup win and etch the 2008 Melbourne Cup in the history books. The media frenzy before race, and the Melbourne Cup Odds on the day, deemed the international threat unstoppable – with the Luca Cumani trained Mad Rush jumping as the $5.50 favourite, followed by Aden O’Brien’s Septimus at $7, New Zealand hope Nom De Jeu at $7.50 and the Dermot Weld’s Profound Beauty at $8.50. However, Cumming’s, nicknamed the "Cups King", once again proved his genius and came up aces with a memorable victory. C'est La Guerre ($26) finished third.
