Septimus charges up the 2008 Melbourne Cup Odds
Irish stayer Septimus' length-and-a-quarter victory in the Group 3 Curragh Cup on Saturday, 28 June has marked the five-year-old stallion as a potential Melbourne Cup contender this Spring Carnival.Post his convincing win, Septimus is being quoted at $15 to win the Melbourne Cup by bookmaker IASbet.com – second favourite to last year's Melbourne Cup winner Efficient at $12 and ahead of Victoria Derby winner Kibbutz at $19.
Septimus is Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien's latest Melbourne Cup ambition, after two previous campaigns with Ascot Gold Cup champion Yeats in 2006 and Mahler in 2007 yielded mixed results – the gallopers finished seventh and third respectively.
Chief handicapper Greg Carpenter has already stated that Septimus will not receive a weight penalty in the Melbourne Cup for his victory in the Curragh Cup and should run at 57kg – depending on the rest of his pre-spring performances.
Both Septimus and Yeats could feature in the 2008 Melbourne Spring Carnival, but O'Brien has stated that he will not make a final decision until September. The Irish St Leger will be the next target for Septimus, followed by a tilt at The King George and Lonsdale Cup.
