Baghdatis reached the quarters of the Qatar Open before losing to Federer. He again lost to the Swiss Ace when beaten in the final of the Australian Open .

By his own admission, the Cypriot failed to handle the pressure of his new found fame. Coupled with nagging injuries, he struggled to recapture his Australian Open form on the American hardcourts before emerging again at Wimbledon. Baghdatis easily accounted for both Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt before being disposed of by Nadal in the semifinal.
